Belarus Flag (1991)

This red and white flag is the former flag of Belarus. It was used unofficially in West Belarus between 1918-1939, between 1942-1944 during German occupation, and between 1991-1995. It features three horizontal bands, one red in the middle and two white on the outside. Red and white have been used in the heraldry of both the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth. One origin of the flags colors holds that during the Battle of Grunwald in 1410, after having defeated the Germans of the Teutonic Order, a Belarusian soldier tore off a blood soaked bandage and raised it in victory.
