Benin Coat of Arms
The coat of arms of Benin was first adopted in 1964, and was readopted in 1990. The shield of the arms is divided into four quadrants. The upper left quadrant depicts a castle in the style of the Somba, which represents the nation's history. The upper right corner depicts the Star of Benin, which is the highest award that can be received in the nation. The bottom left corner depicts a palm tree, which are ample in the nation. The bottom right corner depicts a sailing ship, which represents the arrival of Europeans. The shield is supported by two leopards. A banner at the bottom contains the national motto Fraternite, Justice, Travail, which stands for brotherhood, justice, and work. Two horns with corn in the ear and filled with sand rest atop the shield and represent prosperity[1].
