Bennington Flag (1776)
The Bennington Flag is a famous version of the American flag that is closely associated with the Battle of Bennington that occurred in 1777 during the American Revolution. The red, white, and blue flag features thirteen stars and thirteen stripes that represent the original thirteen colonies that rebelled against Great Britain. The blue canton contains the number "76", which is a reference to 1776, the year in which the Declaration of Independence was signed. Although some hold the flag was used during the battle and carried off the field by Nathaniel Fillmore, other hold that the flag may have not been created until The War of 1812, or the during the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1826, or even during the first centennial celebration in 1876[1].
