Bern Coat of Arms
The city, district, and canton of Bern, Switzerland all use this as their coat of arms. It features a red shield crossed by a diagonal yellow band. Inside of the yellow band is a black bear walking upwards towards the hoist. The bear motif was used as far back as 1224, and has its origins in the story of the city's founder, Duke Berchtold V of Zähringen, who vowed to name the city after the first animal he met during his hunt, which was a bear[1].
