Christchurch Coat of Arms
This is the coat of arms of the city of Christchurch, New Zealand. It was granted to the city on February 21, 1949. The upper portion of the shield depicts four ships, known as "The First Four Ships" (the Charlotte-Jane, the Randolph, the Sir George Seymour and the Cressy) which arrived in 1850 with the cities first settlers. Below this, a mitre is depicted, which signifies the fact that the city was planned by the Church of England and was made a Bishop's See. Also depicted are a fleece and a garb, which denote the agricultural and pastoral pursuits of the surrounding area. The two bars wavy at the bottom represent the two rivers running through the city: the Avon and Heathcote. The shield is supported by two Pukeko, a native bird of the area[1].
