Gadsden Flag
The Gadsden Flag is a popular historical American Flag that features a depiction of a coiled rattlesnake, in a striking position, on a yellow field. Below this, is the motto "Don't Tread On Me". The flag was designed by Christopher Gadsden, an American general and statesman. The use of the symbol of the rattlesnake in American flags dates back to 1751 when Benjamin Franklin drew a political cartoon for the Pennsylvania Gazette which suggested that since Britain had sent convincted criminals to America, the colonies should send rattlesnakes back to Britain. The symbol was also used during the French and Indian War is the famous "Join or Die" Flag. The origins of the Gadsden flag during the American Revolution come from the fact that the rattlesnake was depicted on the yellow drums of the Marines who accompanied the Navy on its mission to stop British ships from carrying supplies to British troops[1].
