India Flag (1921)
This historical Indian flag, known Gandhi's flag, was introduced at a Congress meeting in 1921. It is a horizontal tricolour of white, green, and red. It depicts a spinning wheel in the center. The flag was proposed by Gandhi who commissioned Pingali Venkayya to design the banner. The red represent Hindus, the green represented Muslims, and white stood for other religions. However, Sikh's insisted that the flag include black for their religion. To avoid such sensitivities, in 1929, Gandhi interpreted the flag in a more secular manner, stating that the red stood for sacrifice, white stood for purity, and green stood for hope[1].
