Iceland Coat of Arms

The coat of arms of Iceland was adopted on July 1, 1944. It features a shield which depicts a red Scandinavian cross outlined in silver on a blue background, much like the nation's national flag. The shield has four supporters, known as the four protectors of Iceland, standing on a pahoehoe lava block. One is a bull, which is the protector of southwestern Iceland. Another is an eagle, which protects northwestern Iceland. Another is a a dragon, which protects the northeast. Lastly, a Rock-giant, known as Bergrisi, protects the southeast. The Vikings respected these creatures and many of the bows of their ships would depict such creatures[1].

Iceland Flag
The flag of Iceland features a red Scandinavian cross outlined in white on a blue field. It was adopted on June 17, 1944 when Iceland became a republic. The flag has its origins in the first flag of Iceland from 1897, which was just a white cross on a blue field. In 1915, a red cross was inserted into the white cross, and this new version was adopted in 1918 when Iceland became independent from Denmark. Red represents the fire produced by the island's volcanoes, white recalls the ice and snow that covers Iceland, and blue stands for the Atlantic Ocean[2].
