Illinois Flag
The flag of Illinois features the Great Seal of Illinois, an eagle which holds in its beak a banner containing the state motto "State Sovereignty, National Union", on a white field with the word "Illinois" written below the seal in blue. The flag was adopted on July 6, 1915 after a flag design contest started by Ella Park Lawrence, state regent of the Daughters of the American Revolution, was won by Lucy Derwen. The word "Illinois" was later added to the flag in July 1, 1970, per the request of Chief Petty Officer Bruce McDaniel, who observed that many of the soldier he served with in the Vietnam War did not recognize the flag[1].
