Join or Die Flag
The Join or Die flag has its origins in a political cartoon created by Benjamin Franklin and published in the Pennsylvania Gazette on May 9, 1754. It features a snake divided into eight parts, with each part containing the initials of a British American colony. It stressed the importance of the need for the colonies to unite, especially with regard to the Seven Years' War, also known as the French and Indian War, in which the colonists debated on whether or not to fight the French. The snake symbol was popularized again during the American Revolution as a symbol of the need of the colonies to unite against the British[1].
