Kiribati Coat of Arms

The coat of arms of Kiribati features a shield that depicts a yellow frigatebird soaring over a yellow rising sun on a red background. The sun is depicted rising out of a sea of alternating horizontal white and blue wavy lines. The 17 rays that radiate from the sun represent the 16 Gilbert Islands and Banaba. Although the coat of arms was proposed on May 1, 1937, it was not adopted until 1979[1].

Kiribati Flag
The flag of Kiribati is almost identical to the nation's coat of arms. It was adopted on July 12, 1979. The blue and white wavy lines represent the Pacific Ocean. The frigatebird represents command of the sea, as well as power and freedom. The rising sun represents Kiribati's location near the equator. The flag was first used during independence day celebrations[2].
