Manchester Coat of Arms
This is the coat of arms of the city of Manchester, England. It features a red shield with golden diagonal bands, which derive from the arms of the Lords of Manchester who ruled the area prior to 1301. A sailing ship is depicted in the upper portion of the shield, which symbolizes trade and enterprise. The shield is supported by a lion and an antelope, which derive from the arms of King Henry IV, Duke of Lancaster. The arms were granted in 1842. A banner at the bottom reads "Concilio Et Labore", meaning "By council and work", which is derived from Ecclesiastics 37:16[1].
