Massachusetts Flag
The flag of Massachusetts was adopted on March 21, 1971. It features a white field on which depicts the state's coat of arms in the center. The arms is a blue shield that depicts an Algonquin Native American holding a bow and arrow, with a single white star in the upper left corner. The arrow points downward and signifies peace. A blue ribbon surrounds the shield, containing the state's motto "Ense Petit Placidam, Sub Libertate Quietem", which means "By the Sword We Seek Peace, But Peace Only Under Liberty". Above the shield, the state's military crest is depicted, showing an arm holding a sword. The blade of the sword points up, signifying that liberty was won through the American Revolution[1].
