New England Flag
The flag of New England features a red field on which a green pine tree is depicted on a white canton. Its origins lay in the design of the red naval ensign of the British Royal Navy, which features a red field that depicted a St. George's Cross on a white canton. This ensign was used at both Jamestown and Plymouth. However, New England Puritans, led by Roger Williams, objected to the use of a Christian cross on their flag, so for a time, a red flag with a plain white canton was used. Some flags began to add the pine tree to the canton during the reign of King James II, which may have been inspired by the pine-tree shilling which was minted in Massachusetts[1].
