Don't Give Up The Ship Flag
This flag, known as the Don't Give Up The Ship Flag or Commodore Perry's Flag, has its origins in the War of 1812, when in 1813 during a naval battle between the USS Chesapeake and the HMS Shannon that was tilting toward British victory, Captain James Lawrence, being morally wounded, gave the dying command of "Don't Give Up The Ship" to his men. A friend of Lawrence's, Oliver Hazard Perry, ordered that a a blue naval ensign be created with this phrase. It was subsequently used as a flag during a naval battle against the British on Lake Erie in 1813[1].
