Portugal Flag
The flag of Portugal is a vertical bicolor. The green band, located at the hoist, is smaller than the red band, located at the fly. The nation's lesser version of its coat of arms is depicted where the two bands meet. The flag was currently adopted on June 30, 1911. The colors were used 1891 by the Portuguese Republican Party, and represent a break from the former colors used in the flag of the religious monarch. Green represents hope and red represents blood shed in defense of the nation. Green was used in the banner of King John I of Portugal, and red was used in the cross of the Order of Christ[1].

  Portugal Coat of Arms
The coat of arms of Portugal was officially adopted on June 30, 1911, but it derives from the arms of the Kingdom of the Portugal from the Middle Ages. It features a white shield outlines in red. Five blue bezants (originally symbolizing coins and therefore the right the monarchy to issue currency), are arranged within the white shield. Seven golden castles are depicted within the red border, which represent the Moorish castles conquered by the Kingdom of Portugal during the Reconquista. An armorial sphere is located behind the shield, a device that was used to calculate distances, and represents the important role Portugal played in the Age of Discovery[2].
