Washington's Cruisers Flag
Washington's Cruisers Flag, also known as the Appeal to Heaven Flag or Pine Tree Flag, features a green pine tree in the center of a white field. The words "AN APPEAL TO HEAVEN" are depicted above the flag. It was used by a squadron of six cruisers commissioned by George Washington in 1775. The phrase derives from John Locke's seminal work Two Treatises of Government, where Locke states that when all other avenues of seeking justice are exhausted, an "appeal to heaven" remains[1].
